The Acorn Project is seeking a dedicated Project Officer for the Heritage Tree Nursery at our new site . As Project Officer you will play a pivotal role in establishing the Acorn Project Heritage Tree Nursery and establishing a tree seed bank in the Nore/ Suir / Barrow Catchments.
We are searching for a candidate who is passionate about trees and restoring the native forests of Ireland, working with communities and connecting people to nature.
 
The Tree Nursery Officer‘s primary role will be to develop a permanent heritage nursery at our new site. The goal of this project to preserve native tree seeds of the Nore/Barrow/Suir Catchments and enable forestrestoration using native provenance seed. We believe that a collaborative regional approach across thecatchments will help preserve local provenance seed into the future and build climate resilience. The tree nursery officer will also be responsible for managing our dispersed nursery projects and deliver community training.

This role is funded  by the Heritage Council.

Core responsibilities include:
 

-               Overseeing the establishment of Tree Nursery and Seed Storage Infrastructure. ( Polytunnel / Seed Saving beds etc. infrastructure)

-Establishing and managing irrigation systems and infrastructure .

-  Developing policies and procedures for the tree nursery.

- Managing day to day operations of tree nursery, oversee soil preparation, planting, cultivation, transplanting, harvesting of trees.

- Contribute to the development of a financial plan for the tree nursery to secure viability of project into the future.

- Establishing and managing transplanting and grading systems.

- Ensuring organic soil health practices.

- Developing a Land Management plan for the Heritage Tree Nursery Site. ( Including Health and Safety Statements)

- Collaborating to develop a 3 year development strategy for the nursery.

- Developing and Implementing Biosecurity procedures in line with Plant Health Regulations.

- Developing a labelling and tree passport system in line with regulations.

- Maintaining Records and ensuring compliance.

-Compiling regular progress reports for reporting to Board, Partners and Stakeholders.

- Collaborating to Develop interpretative materials and training programmes.

- Managing the dispersed community nurseries and delivering training within communities.

-Collaborating with Seed Co Ordinator and other team members to deliver the Acorn Project Strategy.

 

Essential Requirements:

 

- Horticultural qualification minimum QQI Level 7 or equivalent horticultural experience.

- Minimum 3 years management experience.

- Commitment to ongoing professional development and mentoring.

- Ability to work flexibly, to manage deadlines and to budget.

- Ability to work on one’s own initiative.


-               Excellent communication skills and the ability to maintain collaborative relationships.
-               Capability to manage groups of staff or volunteers .
-               Proficient IT skills. ( Database/ Word Processing)
-               Passion for Nature conservation and restoration.
-               Working Knowledge of Plant Health Regulations and willingness to complete DAFM Authorised Professional Operator Training Course .
-               Knowledge of Soil Health and Cultivating plants. Experienced in long-term soil fertility management, including compost and compost teas.
-               Experience in managing seeds/ trees.
-               Working Knowledge of biodiversity and ecology.
-               Full, Clean Driving Licence.
 
 
 
Desirable Characteristics & Experience
 
-               Third-level education in horticulture/ forestry / ecology or other relevant subject.
-               Experience with farming machinery (tractor, rotovator, quad etc) and tools (landscaping and cultivation tools). Good DIY skills.
-               Experience with trees
-               Safe Pass Training .
-               Ability to multitask, with good attention to detail, focused.
-               Ability to work in a physically demanding role.
 
Applicants must be eligible to work in Ireland. Reporting to the CEO and Board ofthe Acorn Project.

Salary: €22,000 for 2 day working week on site.
Initially a 12 Month Contract subject to Probation period: 6 months Office Hours: 9am - 5:30pm Monday-Thursday
